August: A Sold-Out Wine & Tapas Experience

Image
Photo: The Tapas Crew that made it happen  More than 50 guests gathered on July 26 for a sold-out evening celebrating the flavors of Spain. Hosted by Deb Adair Tongue, the event offered six carefully selected wines, each paired with a traditional tapa representing its region. The tasting began in Andalucía with the César Florido Amontillado Sherry, served alongside refreshing gazpacho. For some, the wine's name brought to mind Edgar Allan Poe's classic story " The Cask of Amontillado" , adding an unexpected literary touch to the first course. Guests then sampled Spanish wines paired with an assortment of tapas served family style. The menu offered something for everyone, including hearty beef, lamb and pork albóndigas al Jerez, savory seafood tapas gambas al ajillo and piquillos rellenos de atún . Other tasty options were vegan and gluten-free, such as gazpacho and patatas bravas . One of the evening's standout wines was the Mar de Frades Albariño 2024 from Gali...

August: Adventurers' Club

Image
I hope you were able to join us for our August 5th meeting. We were fortunate to host a spokesman and volunteer from the Evergreen Mountain Bike Association (EMBA), who shared great information about the Port Gamble bike park—including lessons, youth camps, trail-maintenance opportunities, and more. Our next Adventurers’ Club meeting is on September 2 and will feature our very own Joanne Graves and her sister. Both are active with Washington Trails Association (WTA.org), the premier resource for hikers and backpackers. Joanne will be freshly back from Norway, where she’ll have hiked the St. Olaf Pilgrim Trail, and we’re hoping she’ll share a bit about that experience as well. If you enjoy backpacking, camping, or exploring backcountry forest roads, we have two upcoming outings you might love. August 28–30: A 3-day / 2-night backpacking trip in the Stevens Pass area. The trail is moderate and only 3 miles, making it accessible for most skill levels. September : A 1–2 night off-ro...

August: Merch Update

Image
Vice President Joe Perez and Merchandise Coordinator Diane Power are pleased to have our latest merch sale wrapped up, and it sounds like everyone was happy with their orders! Unfortunately, we know quite a few members missed out this time around—but good news is coming. Keep an eye out for our new Poulsbo Sons of Norway online merch store, coming soon to the lodge website!  The new store will be ongoing, with no minimum order requirements, so you’ll be able  to shop whenever you’d like.  We’ll have a much bigger selection, including more logos, apparel  options, caps and hats, mugs, glasses, and more. The new store should be up and running by September. Stay tuned!

Did You Know You Can Get Away to Snoqualmie Pass  for Just $45 a Night? Yes, you read that right! One of the great perks of being a Sons of Norway member is having access to Trollhaugen Lodge at Snoqualmie Pass. We had the pleasure of visiting Trollhaugen for the second time this past July. Our first visit was during the winter for their annual cross-country ski race. This time, five couples from our lodge headed up for the District 2 Steak Fry on July 18, and several of us made a night of it and stayed over. If you’re not familiar with Trollhaugen, it was built in 1972 and is owned and operated by District 2, which our lodge is part of. It sleeps more than 50 people and has a large living room, two fireplaces, a ping-pong table, ski rentals, a hot tub, horseshoes and more. There are nearby spots for fishing, and the lodge sits next to a great trail system for hiking, biking and, of course, skiing. There’s also some fascinating history behind Trollhaugen and its founding members. Y...

August: Weekend at Trollhaugen!

The district two Sons of Norway adult heritage retreat is an opportunity to meet members from other lodges, learn or practice Norwegian folk arts, and relax in the mountains at Trollhuagen, the Sons of Norway District Two ski lodge on Stampede Pass.  This year's retreat is September 18-20. At the retreat you can learn to make a Viking bracelet, make a Bunad headband, try your hand on rutevev (Norwegian square weaving) and make felted acorns! We hope to have a Rosemaling class as well as instruction in Hardangar embroidery.  The $160 registration fee covers lodging, meals from dinner Friday until lunch Sunday, and class material and instruction.

Hei og velkommen, verdsatte medlemmer av Sons of Norway Poulsbo Lodge. August is the bridge between what we have accomplished and what we have yet to achieve. As we enter August, I encourage all to reflect on the difference volunteers make every day. The warmth of summer reminds us that kindness spreads like sunshine. Every hour we give, every person we help, and every member we encourage strengthens our fraternity and our community. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our Lodge. Through their time, effort, and dedication, good intentions become meaningful action. I extend my sincere gratitude to all who volunteer and support our Lodge. Your service not only strengthens our organization today but also helps preserve its legacy for future generations. As members return from summer activities, I hope we come back energized and ready to serve. Together, we can continue planning successful programs and events for the months ahead. The many accomplishments of the Poulsbo Sons of Norway Lodge ha...

August: Celebrating Dan Willetts’ 105th Birthday!

Image
The Sons of Norway in Poulsbo recently had the honor of celebrating the 105th birthday of Dan Willett, a remarkable member of our community whose life has been filled with family, adventure, and a love of the outdoors. Our Lodge Pancake Crew made Dan a special Pancake and sang Happy Birthday.  Dan was born on August 8, 1921, in Minnesota. His family has deep roots in American history, tracing their arrival to America on the second ship to reach Plymouth in 1626. Dan's mother, Ebba, was a full-blooded Swede, and his father came from a multi-national heritage. Left: Dan and his friend Louise at the August 2nd Pancake Breakfast. Below: The Pancake Crew Presents Dan's Special Birthday Pancake and S ings Happy Birthday. Growing up in Minnesota, Dan developed a passion for athletics and earned a varsity letter in hockey. His love of sports and the outdoors would remain constant throughout his life. In 1978, Dan and his wife, Helen, moved to Poulsbo, where their family settled along...
